Maryland Archeology Month is a celebration of our shared archeological heritage - created by Maryland's diverse inhabitants over the last 12,000 years. Protecting this irreplaceable archeological heritage provides opportunities to discover and learn from the past. We invite you to "Get Involved!" in Maryland's past by attending as many events as you can.

Learn about Montgomery County Archaeology!  Bring a bag lunch and spend the day—activities include archaeological dig exhibit, Needwood Mansion tours, 19th century costumed interpreters, simulated archaeology digs for children, old-time games, atl-atl spear throwing and more!

Field Work and Lab Work

Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum: Public Archaeology Program

Join JPPM archeologists in the excavation of early 18th-century buildings at the Smith’s St.  Leonard Site.   The program runs from May 8 through June 30.   Tuesdays and Thursdays are “Lab Days,” while Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays are “Field Days.”

Introduction to Archaeology

Discover Archaeology!

The whole family will enjoy learning the secrets of this historic rural farm with the help of professional archaeologists.  Make new discoveries as you learn hands-on techniques, talk about and learn from the artifacts you might find.  Tour the historic Zeigler Log House and investigate hidden clues that tell the story of its former residents.

Lecture  

A Conservation Approach to Firearms

Conservator Nicole Doub will give a presentation on how conservators at the MAC Lab assess, treat and display historic artillery from archaeological and historic collections. This talk will highlight some of the interesting projects that have come to the MAC Lab's Conservation Department in recent years, from muskets and pistols to cannons and mortars.
