Historic St. Mary’s City offers a variety of historic interpretations of Maryland in the 17th century. Reconstructions include a Woodland Indian Hamlet, William Nuthead’s Print House, Smith’s Ordinary, Cordea’s Hope, the State House of 1676, the Maryland Dove (a recreated 17th-century ship), and a 17th-century tobacco plantation. The St. John’s Site Museum preserves the foundation of the building where many of Maryland’s “firsts” occurred. Exhibits explore the state’s legacy of liberty and how archaeologists know what they know about the past.

March 24
Event: A Celebration of Maryland Day at Maryland's first Capital
The official program begins at 11:00 a.m. at the Inn at Brome Howard (18281 Rosecroft Road). The keynote speaker is Chanel Compton, representing the Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture (MCAAHC). The program includes the presentation of HSMC’s highest honor, the Cross Bottony Award, to the MCAAHC, whose grant support made it possible for HSMC to preserve and interpret the Brome Quarter, where enslaved — and, later, freed — African Americans lived for more than 200 years.
After the ceremony, join us for the opening of our new exhibit in the Brome Quarter entitled, Struggle for Freedom: African American Life in St. Mary’s City in the 19th and 20th Centuries, which tells the story of African American people during the period of enslavement, post-emancipation, and into the 20th century — a story of resilience and self-determination.
