The Calverton Site is the location of the 17th–18th century county and a prehistoric shell midden. The site was the focus of the ASM and
MHT Field Sessions in 2017 and 2018. The site investigation was led by Kristi Uunila. The site was first occupied by indigenous people and later served as the first seat of
government for Calvert County. The town was depicted on a plat map prepared in 1682 (Boteler and Jones) with eleven structures, including a prison, a courthouse, and a chapel,
as well as residential and commercial buildings.
The 2017-2018 Field Sessions examined what remained of the town, the accuracy of the plat, and encountered remnants of the prehistoric
occupation. The 2018 field session continued examination of the previously identified components, identifying several new features, three of which contained artifacts which could
be directly attributed to the occupation of the town of Calverton. Evidence suggested that the Native American artifacts recovered may not all have predated the town’s occupation,
and may have been the result of Contact period trading or other relations.
