The Chapel Branch West site (18CA270) is a Pre-Colonial American Indian site located just north of Denton, MD, in Caroline County, on the first terrace on the
south side of the Choptank River and the north side of the Chapel Branch stream. An informal survey in 2022 identified stone tools, chipping debris and sherds of Woodland period ceramics on the surface
of the site. The ceramic sherds included Accokeek, Vinette I, Mockley, and Townsend pottery indicating that the site was repeatedly occupied between 3,000 and 1,000 years ago.
The pricipal goal of the 2023 ASM Field Session was too continue investigations of the buried living area encountered during shovel testing pits dug in 2022. The
primary effort during the session was to define the horizontal boundaries of the site and investigate the vertical stratigraphy of the site.
